Celebrating Women in Web3: Interview with Aurelia Mwikali, Web3 Builder and Community Leader

As part of our celebration of Women’s Month, MEXC continues to spotlight inspiring women who are shaping the future of the digital economy. Across Africa, more women are stepping into Web3; not only as traders or investors, but as builders, innovators, & educators.

One of those inspiring figures is Aurelia Mwikali, a Web3 builder and marketing strategist who has been actively driving crypto adoption and community growth across Africa.

In this interview with MEXC, Aurelia shares her journey into crypto, the lessons she has learned along the way, and why women have an important role to play in shaping the future of Web3.

Discovering Crypto: From Curiosity to Career

Q: Aurelia, thank you for joining us during Women’s Month. Can you tell us how your crypto journey began?

My journey into crypto started out of pure curiosity. At the time, I was exploring different ways to understand the digital economy and how people were making money online.

I remember hearing conversations about Bitcoin and blockchain from friends in tech communities. At first, it sounded complicated, but the more I listened, the more I became curious about what was really happening behind the scenes.

So I started researching. I joined online forums, attended community meetups, and followed conversations about decentralized finance and blockchain innovation.

Eventually, I began learning about crypto trading and the broader Web3 ecosystem. But what fascinated me the most wasn’t just the trading aspect. It was the technology and the opportunities it creates for people who previously had limited access to global financial systems.

Over time, that curiosity evolved into a career. Today, I work closely with crypto products and communities, helping projects connect with users and drive adoption across Africa.

Navigating a Male-Dominated Industry

Q: The crypto industry is often seen as male-dominated. What challenges did you face entering the space as a woman?

The reality is that Web3 and crypto are still heavily male-dominated spaces. When women enter the ecosystem, they sometimes feel like they need to prove themselves more than their male counterparts.

There were moments early on where people were surprised to see a woman deeply involved in conversations about blockchain technology or trading strategies.

Sometimes the bias isn’t obvious, but it exists. For example, during community discussions or online forums, people often assume the person behind a crypto account is male.

But rather than letting that discourage me, I focused on building expertise and showing up consistently.

Knowledge is powerful. The more you learn about the technology, the markets, and the ecosystem, the more confidence you gain. And confidence changes the way people perceive you.

I was also fortunate to connect with supportive communities and mentors who encouraged me to keep learning and contributing.

Building in Web3 Beyond Trading

Q: Many people think crypto is only about trading. How has the ecosystem shaped your career beyond that?

That’s a great question because one of the biggest misconceptions about crypto is that it’s only about trading. Trading is just one part of the ecosystem. Web3 is much broader.

For me, the most exciting opportunities have come from community building, marketing strategy, and ecosystem development.

I currently run a marketing agency that helps Web3 products connect with users. This includes helping exchanges, blockchain projects, and fintech platforms grow their communities and improve user engagement.

Web3 projects need storytellers, marketers, developers, educators, and strategists. There are many ways to contribute beyond trading.

Being part of this ecosystem has allowed me to work with people across different countries and collaborate on projects that are pushing innovation forward.

Crypto and Financial Inclusion in Africa

Q: Africa is often highlighted as a region with strong crypto adoption. How do you see crypto improving financial inclusion, especially for women?

Crypto has enormous potential when it comes to financial inclusion, particularly in Africa.

In many regions, traditional banking services are still inaccessible or inefficient. But with crypto, anyone with a smartphone and internet connection can participate in the global financial system.

For women, this can be transformative. Access to decentralized financial tools means women can save, invest, transact, and build businesses without relying on traditional financial gatekeepers.

Women are also naturally strong community builders. When women gain financial knowledge and access to tools like crypto, the impact goes beyond the individual — it strengthens families and entire communities.

We’re already seeing innovative solutions emerging in Africa that combine blockchain technology with mobile payments and digital finance.

These innovations are helping bridge the gap between the traditional financial world and the decentralized future.

Q: What advice would you give to women who are interested in entering the crypto space today?

My biggest advice is simple: start with education. Before trading or investing, take time to understand the fundamentals. Learn what Bitcoin is, how blockchain works, and how markets behave.

Secondly, find a community. Learning alongside others makes the journey easier and more enjoyable. Communities provide mentorship, accountability, and support when markets become volatile or confusing.

Third, start small. Crypto markets move fast, and it’s important to manage risk carefully.

And finally, don’t let stereotypes stop you. Women belong in Web3, not just as users, but as builders, leaders, and innovators.
